Aromatherapy is the uses of plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils and other aroma compounds for improving psychological and physical well being.
It can be offered as a complementary therapy or as a form of alternative medicine. Complementary therapies may be offered with standard treatments, such as acupuncture or massage therapy or as alternative medicine offered instead of conventional medical techniques.
Aromatherapists, who specialize in the practice of aromatherapy, utilize blends of therapeutic essential oils that can be issued through topical application, massage, inhalation or water immersion to achieve a desired response.
Types of application
The types of application of aromatherapy are:
Air diffusion for environmental fragrancing or aerial disinfection, usually in a
Inhalation for respiratory disinfectant, decongestant, as an expectorant as well as for psychological effects.
Topical applications for massage, in baths, compresses, and therapeutic skin care
Aromatherapy can be used for treatment or prevention of disease by use of essential oils. Other uses include pain and anxiety reduction, enhancement of energy and short-term memory, relaxation, and reduction of eczema-induced itching.
Two basic mechanisms explain the purported effect of aromatherapy. One is the influence of aroma on the brain, the limbic system, through the olfactory system. The other is the direct pharmacological effects of essential oils.
Conditions and Aromatherapy Treatments
Endocrine System: Cinnamon bark, dill, pepper (black), rosemary
Grief/Sorrow: Bergamot (turns grief to joy), chamomile (Roman), Clary sage, eucalyptus, juniper, lavender
Joints: Aching-Nutmeg, Discomfort-Birch, Inflamed-Chamomile
Pimples: Clary Sage
Sedative: Angelic, coriander, jasmine, lemongrass, marjoram, orange, tangerine
