What is Interstitial Cystitis (IC)
The precise cause of interstitial cystitis is unknown, but it is likely that many varying factors contribute to it. Some patients with IC also have a defect in the protective lining (epithelium) of the bladder. A leak in the epithelium may allow toxins in urine to irritate the bladder wall. Other possible but unproven contributing factors include a possible autoimmune reaction, infection or allergy, and heredity.
The signs and symptoms of IC vary from person to person. If you have IC, your symptoms may also vary over time, periodically flaring in response to common triggers, such as menstruation, stress, exercise, sitting for a long time, and/or sexual activity. Read further for Natural Treatments.
Interstitial cystitis signs and symptoms include:
* Pain in your pelvis or between the vagina and anus in women
* Pain between the scrotum and anus in men (perineum)
* Chronic pelvic pain
* A persistent, urgent need to urinate
* Frequent urination, often of small amounts, throughout the day and night (up to 60 times a day)
* Pain or discomfort while the bladder fills and relief after urinating.
* Pain during sexual intercourse.
Severity of symptoms vary for everyone, and some patients experience symptom-free periods. The signs and symptoms of interstitial cystitis may be like those of a urinary tract infection but, there is usually no infection present. However, symptoms often worsen when a patient with interstitial cystitis gets a urinary tract infection.
Factors that may cause you to be at a higher risk of developing IC:
* Your skin and hair color. Fair skin and red hair has been associated with a greater risk of IC.
* Your sex. Women are diagnosed with interstitial cystitis more often than men. [Symptoms in men may mimic IC, but they’re more often associated with an inflammation of the prostate gland (prostatitis).]
* Your age. Most people with IC are diagnosed during their 30s or older.
* Having a chronic pain disorder. IC may also be associated with other chronic pain disorders, such as fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome.
Possible complications of IC:
- Pain and Discomfort The pain and discomfort in the pelvic region and the bladder is termed as IC. It often requires urinating frequently.
- Reduced bladder capacity. IC can cause stiffening of the bladder wall, which allows your bladder to hold less urine.
- Sexual intimacy problems. Frequent urination and pain may strain your personal relationships, and sexual intimacy may suffer.
- Emotional troubles. The chronic pain and interruptions in sleep, associated with IC may cause emotional stress and can lead to depression.
- Avoid Stress. It can trigger symptoms and flare-ups.
- Other Reasons behind a flare in symptoms. Issues like infections, bowel disorder, endometriosis and many others. The causes can be previous bladder damage, bladder overdistention, spinal column damage, mast cell activation and more.

Reducing the amount of acidity in the system, alkalizing it with baking soda can give great relief to sufferers of IC. To use baking soda, mix ½ to 1 tsp of baking soda in a glass of water and drink 2-3 times a day. You can also soak in a baking soda bath by mixing baking soda in a bath half-filled with warm water and soak for a couple of minutes to help reduce pain.
Hot and Cold Therapy
To reduce the pain and swelling associated with the condition, apply moist heat packs to low back and kidney areas, then follow with ice packs. Alternate hot and cold therapy. This can be done daily or whenever you feel pain in the bladder and pelvis areas. (I put low moist heat on urethra when in a flare up of symptoms.)
Epsom Salt Bath
Epsom salt provides relief for soreness and muscle pain, because it contains magnesium, a natural muscle relaxer. Since epsom salt contains magnesium as it’s main component, soaking in a bath helps the body absorb the magnesium and ease symptoms.
Other remedies that may be effective in treating IC:
* Apis mellifica—Indicated for stinging pain that is worse with heat.
* Cantharis—Indicated for intolerable urgency with burning, scalding urination.
* Staphysagria—Indicated for a urinary tract infection that is the result of sexual intercourse.
* Sarsaparilla—Indicated for pain that burns after urination has stopped.
