This is a subject I know plenty about, mostly from first hand experience. Pain is the bodies way of saying stop, that hurts! It is a natural function of the body for self protection. A great example of this is a hot stove. If you touch the stove you get a signal to your brain that says move your hand, that hurts! But many of us live with Chronic Pain daily. Chronic pain can be caused by so many things; an injury, illness, long term diseases, or often no reason at all or a reason you can’t see (invisible illness). I think I’ve tried everything to ease my pain since our auto accident 12 years ago and in this article I want to share with you some products that have helped me.
I know some people who can’t stand compression, it hurts instead of helps. I for one love compression, it works for me! I wear Tommy Copper compression everything; leggings, gloves, knee braces, elbow braces, tank top, and long or short sleeve shirts. I wear their leggings daily, I also sleep in them and it has helped my back and leg pain more than I can tell you. Compression hose are good also and I wear them sometimes too. Also, compression sleeves for knee, wrist, elbow, and ankle are wonderful when you need to focus on just 1 joint or area. I have multiple sleeves for every part of my body and if it’s bothering me I add compression to that area.
Heat is a lifesaver for me! I have a hot tub that helps so much between the moist heat and the jets, it is wonderful. Now I know not everyone can get a hot tub, the only reason I have one is the house we bought, when my husband made his last job change, had a hot tub on the back deck. If you can get a hot tub it will help you tremendously. Also, hot baths, showers (try adding Epsom salt and lavender essential oil or bath bombs you can make or buy) and heating pads are always a great option. CAUTION!! With heating pads make sure its moist heat, I use regular heating pads and put a wet washcloth in a ziplock bag between me and the heating pad. You can buy moist heat heating pads, but they are more expensive. Also, be sure you don’t turn the temperature up too much, if your body adjusts to the heat you could get burned.
Ice is one of those things that works for you or it doesn’t. I can’t use much ice, it makes me hurt worse. There are two exceptions to this; an injury or a headache/migraine. These are the only two times I can use ice for Pain without making it worse. You just have to give it a try and see if it works for you.
Topical’s are anything you rub on to relieve pain. A few of my favorites are, Arnica especially for bruises and muscle pain. Outback Pain Relief roll on is awesome for sore painful muscles (See Product Review: HERE ). There are all kinds of topical’s, over the counter, Aspercreme, Tiger balm, Capsaicin cream, and I could go on and on. I can’t use any of these because I am so Chemically Sensitive, I have to use all natural products and I highly recommend you do as well. All natural products are just easier on the body, especially if it’s already stressed with pain or an injury. If you do want to try any of these, you just have to try them out until you find the one that works for you.
Massage is so helpful for me. I know some people who are so sensitive to touch massage hurts them instead of helps. The important thing is to communicate with your therapist and tell them what you need, only you know how your body feels!
Chiropractic also something thats a great help for me. Getting your spine aligned is vital for good health and healing. Again find a chiropractor that works for you and communicate! Exercise is so important for health and healing. Taking a stroll, yoga, tia chi, or water exercise, any exercise is better than none. Start small if you can only do 2 or 3 minutes, start there and slowly work your way up to 30 to 60 minutes a day 6 days a week.
You just have to try and try again until you find what works for you. I have tried just about everything you can imagine in the last 12 years. Remember just because something doesn’t work today doesn’t mean it won’t tomorrow or next week. If you’ve tried something in the past and it didn’t work give it a try again. Unless of course you had a reaction to it. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.
